MUTLI-YEAR RECESS FUND

After careful consideration, The PTA and the PS/IS 78Q administration have agreed on a plan to implement daily recess for every child in both schools. Each grade will “flip-flop” lunch and recess; half of each grade will attend lunch first, followed by recess, while the other half will attend recess first, followed by lunch. We will utilize two programs, Kids Orbit and Learning Leaders, in addition to school aides and staff to organize a consistent and safe daily recess routine.

Kids Orbit will place 4 employees per school in both lunchrooms and the indoor/outdoor recess areas. The program cost will be approximately $55,000 for the remainder of the 2016-2017 school year. There will be opportunities for children to participate in organized games, utilize equipment purchased by the PTA, and/or free play. We will re-evaluate the program before the end of the school year to determine if we will renew the contract. Assuming we retain the same number of Kids Orbit employees, the cost will be $80,000 for the entire school year. We will need to raise a total of $140,000 for recess by the end of the 2017 school year in order to guarantee a recess program for the 2017-2018 school year. Please note, funding this program will not eliminate programs we have supported in the past or new programs moving forward. If we cannot raise sufficient funds, we will not support the program next year.

Learning Leaders (a parent/caregiver based volunteer program) will cost $2,000 for a two day onsite training. All volunteers are required to attend both training days and complete provided paperwork with references for a background check. Ideally, we would like 4-6 volunteers in each school during both lunch/recess periods from 10:30 am-12:15 pm every day. Please note, parents may not volunteer for their child’s grade. The school administration will coordinate and allow a more flexible schedule for our volunteers. The success of this program will help determine if we need to continue Kids Orbit in the following years. We are in the process of securing training dates for Learning Leaders and will send a notice home.

Our goal is to raise $70,000 by November 30th, which is 50% of our recess fund goal. We are asking every family that is able to contribute to give at least $300 per child, in addition to any donations already given or that you plan on giving to the Family Giving Fund. Please fill out the Donation Form. 100% of all funds donated within this two week time period, will be utilized for recess expenses. All funds donated after November 30th will go directly to the Family Giving Fund and allocated at the PTA’s discretion according to the needs of every student at our school. This is the quickest and most equitable way to implement daily recess and we hope we can count on your support. Thank you and let’s finally get our kids to play every day!!

About PS/IS 78Q PTA

The PS/IS 78Q Parent Teachers Association, founded in June of 2008, is a registered 501(c)3 not for profit organization established to help support the PS/IS 78 Robert F. Wagner Jr. public school located in Long Island City, Queens. Every parent or primary caregiver of a child who attends PS/IS 78Q is a member of the PTA.

We remain committed to enriching the learning experiences of our children. This year, not only do we want to continue funding the efforts we have supported in the past, our goal is to also seek out and provide new opportunities for our children.

Mission Statement: To provide support and resources to the school for the benefit and educational growth of the children and to promote and help develop a cooperative working relationship between the parents and staff of our school.

PS78 PTA Membership

What is the PTA? The main purpose of the Parent Teacher Association is to support the school and, therefore, benefit your child. As a parent, guardian or person in parental relation to a child in the school, you are a member of the PTA.

But there are many more PTA advantages:

School Leadership Team (SLT)

The PS/IS 78Q School Leadership Team (SLT) is comprised of administrators, teachers, and elected parents who meet monthly and work collaboratively on the school’s budget and the Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP), which includes the school’s goals and objectives. It also provides a forum where issues specific to the PS/IS 78Q community can be addressed.

All SLT's must have an equal number of parents and staff. The Principal, the PTA President and a UFT representative (or their designees) are automatically on the team.

The SLT encourages involvement from members of the school community, and welcomes attendance at its meetings. Questions or comments for the SLT may be emailed to Genevieve Bernier at genevieve@psis78pta.org.

Community District Education Council

We are very lucky to now have a parent representative on the Community District Education Council. Congratulations to Sabina Omerhodzic, for her new role as Queens Borough President Appointee for the CDEC30. We can now rest assured that our voices will be heard. Her appointment will surely open up the channels of communication between the community and the DOE. Congratulations Sabina!

Together with the CDEC30, elected officials, and the School Construction Authority, we continue to work on two important topics:

  1. 1. securing a new location to accommodate the inevitable growth of our school
  2. 2. continuing to monitor any discussion of the possible truncation of Middle School grades 6-8, which we strongly oppose
